IPL/Laser

Intense pulsed light is a type of cosmetic treatment used to correct and treat wrinkles, spots, and unwanted hair on the body. IPL/laser treatments are similar yet different. IPL uses many wavelengths of light for the treatment, where laser treatments use a single beam of light. Many treatments use both IPL and laser to provide patients with their desired results.

Treatment Areas

IPL/laser procedures work best when used to minimize and remove age spots, sun damage, birthmarks, freckles, varicose veins, and broken blood vessels on the face. This procedure also helps treat patients with rosacea. In addition, those with unwanted body hair use IPL treatments to remove hair on the face, neck, chest, back, legs, bikini line, and underarms. Essentially, IPL can be used anywhere on the body.

Treatment Preparation

Before undergoing IPL/laser treatment, visit a skincare specialist to learn more about the procedure. Share any information about current and past skin conditions, such as eczema, which may affect post-treatment healing. The specialist may recommend avoiding certain medications and activities during the two weeks before the treatment.

Some things to avoid before IPL treatment include direct sunlight, waxing, chemical peels, collagen injections, and tanning beds. It is also best to avoid taking drugs that increase bleeding risks, such as aspirin and ibuprofen. In addition, some patients may be advised to avoid products with vitamin A and glycolic acid.

Treatment Process

Before starting the treatment, the skincare specialist cleans the area by rubbing a cool gel onto the skin. Once clean, light pulses from the IPL device are applied to the skin. Patients are required to wear dark glasses to protect their eyes during treatment. Some patients experience a mild sting on the skin, similar to being snapped by a rubber band.

Treatment takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending upon the size of the treatment area. After treatment, patients can return to their routine and go about regular activities. Because the skin might be sensitive, it is best to conduct activities inside and out of direct sunlight for a few days.

To achieve optimal results, repeat IPL treatments may be needed. For example, most IPL treatments for wrinkles require about three to six, and treatment for hair removal requires six to 12 treatments.

Possible Risks

Most patients experience mild redness and swelling after IPL treatment. These side effects typically fade away within a day or two. However, in some rare cases, patients may experience bruising, blistering, change in skin color, or infection after an IPL procedure. Those with side effects lasting longer than a few days or experiencing more severe side effects must seek treatment immediately from a medical professional.

IPL Costs

The average cost of IPL treatment is between $700 and $1200. The prices depend upon the condition treated and treatment area size. Some patients pay more for anesthesia, tests, medications, and follow-up appointments. IPL is a cosmetic procedure not covered by most health insurance plans.

Pros and Cons

As with any cosmetic treatment, there are pros and cons most patients experience. Here is a list of the pros associated with IPL treatments:

  • Works well to help fade lines and spots
  • It helps get rid of unwanted hair
  • Top layers of skin are not damaged
  • Fewer side effects than laser or dermabrasion
  • Fast recovery

The biggest con associated with IPL treatment is the need to return for several treatments to achieve desired results. Additionally, IPL does not work well on dark skin or light hair.
Take time to discuss all the options available with a skincare specialist, including benefits, risks, and costs. Then, determine if IPL is the best treatment or if another treatment is better for specific skin care needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Are Sunspots?

Sunspots are discolorations that appear on our skin as a result of too much exposure to the sun. Depending on where you live in the world, your level of exposure can be higher or lower. In California, we tend to get a great deal of sun, and we see clients on a regular basis who want to reduce the look of sunspots on their face, hands, neck, legs, and back – the areas that are most often exposed to the sun. Frequent exposure to the sun can also cause skin cancer, scarring from blisters, and more.

What Are Freckles?

People can develop freckles over time – and many do – from natural exposure to the sun. For some people, freckles have been a part of their entire lives, and they are simply discoloration of skin cells. They are not harmful, and they do not indicate that anything is wrong; however, some people have an excessive amount of freckles and wish to treat the areas of their skin most impacted by them to reduce the look of them. Freckles can develop as a result of sun exposure and wear sunscreen can help reduce the development of them over time.

At Aesderma Med Spa, we work with clients on a regular basis to reduce the look of sunspots and freckles. Because we have such a high frequency of sun exposure in California, people are more susceptible to sunspots and freckle development. We use the latest laser technology to help reduce the look of sunspots and freckles in people of all ages. This treatment is effective and can provide results after just one treatment. In some cases, additional or follow up treatments are required to gain maximum results. There is no pain associated with the laser treatment, and our GentleMax Pro technology works fast to provide the desired results.

Side effects don’t cause scarring and discomfort are minimal during treatment. Some clients opt to take an over-the-counter pain reliever before treatment to help reduce discomfort and swelling that may occur after the treatment.

Using the latest laser technology, known as the GentleMax Pro, we can improve the look and feel of your skin in as little as one treatment. Improving skin pigmentation involves stimulating the skin’s cells to produce collagen and encourages the skin to reproduce new skin from the inside out. If you have severely damaged skin, more advanced treatments or a combination of treatments may be required, but you can expect to be impressed with the results.

Laser skin treatment for skin pigmentation involves several treatments over time to improve the look and feel of skin. Many clients experience no pain or discomfort and are thrilled with the results.

Every client we see is different, and that means that even common skin disorders or discolorations require a tailored approach to helping them see the kind of results they want. Pigmentation disorders occur as people age but can also be caused by a loss or increase in melanin, which gives your skin its color. If you have been in an accident or suffered an injury that resulted in a scar, those scars may also be treated with laser skin pigmentation treatment. At our West Hollywood, California medispa, we work with clients who suffer from:

  • Acne Scars
  • Age Spots
  • Sun damage
  • Cellulite
  • Stretch marks
  • Visible veins
  • Rosacea
  • Albinism
  • Vitiligo
  • And much more
